EN 45545-2

Also: EN 45545, BS EN 45545-2, railway fire standard

European standard for fire behaviour of materials and components used in railway vehicle interiors. Defines hazard levels HL1, HL2, HL3 and requirement sets R1-R10 for different applications (seats, walls, floors, ceilings).

EN 45545-2 is the European harmonized standard governing the fire behaviour of materials in passenger and freight rail vehicles. It replaces older national standards (DIN 5510-2, BS 6853, NF F 16-101) and applies across the EU.

The standard defines three Hazard Levels: HL1 (low), HL2 (medium), HL3 (high - applicable to underground operation, double-decker trains and other higher-risk uses). Each material is then assessed against a Requirement Set (R1 through R10+) corresponding to its function: e.g. R1 covers interior wall and ceiling linings, R10 covers floor coverings, R7 covers cable insulation. A material certified to 'HL3 R10' satisfies the highest hazard level for floor applications.
